About the BAH Calculator 2026
An independent, free BAH calculator built to give service members and their families clear, accurate housing-allowance answers — backed by official DoD data and real military-pay expertise.
Our mission
Basic Allowance for Housing is one of the largest parts of a service member's compensation, yet the official tools for understanding it are clunky and give you nothing but a single number. We built this BAH calculator to do better: to turn your duty-station ZIP, pay grade, and dependency status into a complete financial picture — monthly, annual, and daily rates, a housing-affordability comparison, a promotion preview, and a multi-year rate trend — all in seconds, free, and without an account.
Our goal is simple: be the most accurate, most useful, and most trustworthy BAH resource on the internet, for everyone from a brand-new recruit reading their first LES to a veteran calculating a GI Bill housing allowance.
Where our data comes from
Every rate on this site originates from the official annual tables published by the Department of Defense's Defense Travel Management Office (DTMO) — the same authority your finance office uses. DTMO releases updated rates and the ZIP-code-to-MHA mapping each December, effective January 1, and we refresh our underlying data files to match. The housing-affordability comparison layers in public HUD Fair Market Rent data. For the full methodology, see our data and methodology section and the complete BAH guide.
Editorial standards
- Primary sources first. We cite U.S. Code, DTMO, and DFAS rather than secondhand summaries.
- Expert-reviewed. Content is reviewed by someone with direct military-pay experience and dated on publication.
- Transparent and independent. We are not a government site, we clearly mark estimates, and we tell you when to verify with DFAS.
- Corrected promptly. When rules or rates change, we update — and the footer always shows the last rate-update date.
